What is An Actuary?

An actuary is a rigorously trained business professional that applies financial and statistical theories to solve real business problems.

In order to qualify as a Fellow in the Society of Actuaries, a candidate must pass a grueling set of comprehensive exams, typically requiring five to ten years of study. Fellows of the Society of Actuaries must adhere to a strict Professional Code of Conduct, and Members of the American Academy of Actuaries are required to observe Actuarial Standards of Practice when providing professional services.

Scott J. Witt is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries. There are fewer than 25,000 credentialed actuaries in the United States, and fewer than 10,000 are designated as Fellows of the Society of Actuaries.
